Producing Purpose in a Pandemic

After completing my last ministry assignment for this quarter, I’ve been planning and preparing for my biggest, life-changing project/production of 2020: delivering our rainbow baby due September 1. Thinking about my approaching maternity leave made me think about the things I’ve been able to produce during this pandemic:

  • In March, I hosted the first Church Girls Tell All, an intimate luncheon held to celebrate the third anniversary of the Church Girls Movement and to connect with and learn from other young women in ministry.

  • In May, I taught my first masterclass, Dive Deeper in ScriptHer, to teach women how to study the Bible and develop an appetite for the Word of God.

  • In May, I also published the ScriptHer Notes Bible Study Journal, an all-inclusive personal Bible study resource that teaches you how to study the Bible and offers practical study tips.

  • In July, I hosted the first Bridal Retreat for Married and Engaged Women, a weekend event created to enhance the understanding of godly marriage and the role and responsibilities of a godly wife.

Even as I type this list, I’m in awe [insert ugly cry here]. So far, this year has been nothing but proof of what God can do when I exchange my will for His. If anyone would’ve told me that I’d accomplish more as a pregnant, quarantined, working from home, homeschooling wife and mother, I would’ve laughed in their face. That already seems like a lot without adding anything more. But clearly, the Lord knows how much I can actually bear. And now, I’ll be delivering our second son in a few weeks. Thankfully, God’s thoughts and ways are higher than mine (Isaiah 55:8-9).

So, how did I accomplish so much during a time of global panic, an unpredictable economy and uncertainty for the future? I believe my time of intentional prayer and devotion at the beginning of the year prepared me for this season. Although I was only focused on my pregnancy at the time, it changed me in other ways. And since then, I’ve realized:

  1. The pandemic slowed the pace of living but it offers the gift of time.

  2. The enemy attacks when you’re most vulnerable so spiritual and physical progression is a must.

  3. This pandemic surprised us but it didn’t surprise God. He’s still in control.

I don’t care what’s happening in your life or the whole world at large, every word God has spoken about you and every plan He has crafted for you is intentional. Accepting that fact, come what may, is a real game changer.
