Spiritual Ignorance

With maternity leave just a few days a way, I have two goals I plan to accomplish during that time. Since caring for a new baby requires me to take a hiatus from serving others, it’s the best time to serve myself. The first goal is to finish the manuscript for my fourth book. The second goal is to increase my investment in Christian education.

Since the quarantine began, the Lord has really been dealing with me about spiritual ignorance. You can be a believer, with a genuine relationship with Christ, and still lack revelation beyond your basic knowledge of the gospel. As a result, you’d have no idea what God is saying or doing in your personal life. That’s scary to me. To be close to Christ and still miss Him? No, thank you.

As natural ignorance leads to physical death, spiritual ignorance leads to spiritual death (also known as separation from the presence of God). There are four major areas of spiritual ignorance among believers:

  1. Ignorance in Biblical Knowledge

  2. Ignorance in Prayer

  3. Ignorance in Worship

  4. Ignorance in Spiritual Power

Since March, I’ve been combatting ignorance in biblical knowledge by learning how to study the Bible and increasing my appetite for scripture with my Dive Deeper in Scripture Masterclass and ScriptHer Notes Bible Study Journal. And as I work to increase my biblical knowledge, I’ve also been able to combat ignorance in prayer and worship.

Recently, I started my journey to combat ignorance in spiritual power. Since I’m a dreamer, I’ve enrolled in a dream interpretation class. After hearing a message about spiritual power, I was strongly convicted to address my disregard for my dreams. The class meets monthly to learn interpretation, symbolism, dream sources, and more. In addition to this class, I’ve decided to read more Christian books for spiritual knowledge and wisdom. I’m currently reading, How to Walk in the Supernatural Power of God, by Guillermo Maldonado. It’s been a refreshing reminder that it’s not enough to know why I need God (religion), I need to continue on to discover what I can accomplish with Him (relationship). Once I finish that book, I’m planning to read, The Prophetic Responsibility: Your Role in a World That Ignores God's Voice, by Matthew Stevenson III.

Because of Christ and the gift of the Holy Ghost, there’s no need for anyone to suffer from spiritual ignorance or be “destroyed from a lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). You can avoid tainting your witness, succumbing to moral consequences and spiritual weakness by simply choosing to combat spiritual ignorance. There are too many God-inspired resources that exist today for anyone to remain spiritually ignorant or uneducated about any subject. Rejecting knowledge or failing to address what you don’t know is both irresponsible and dangerous. What you don’t know can hurt you.
