Spiritual Regression
According the research, there is a common phenomenon that can occur in children when their mother is pregnant: regression.
May marked six months of pregnancy for me. It also marked the official start of regression in my youngest Sonshine, a process defined as a return to a former or less developed state or earlier stage of life. Consequently, I’ve experienced more temper tantrums, baby talk, and loss of independence with some skills he’s previously achieved. He’s been more clingy, needy, and in need of reassurance of our love and affection for him. It has been exhausting at times but I’m happy to do whatever it takes to relieve my Sonshine of any worry or uncertainty he may have about this impending, somewhat mysterious change, causing him to regress.
Experiencing this natural regression for the first time, since my oldest Sonshine didn’t regress when I was pregnant with my youngest, makes me also wonder what regression looks like spiritually.
Spiritual regression is a perceived and/or experienced decline in spiritual development. Just as my toddler is regressing in the natural because he feels disconnected from me, similarly, spiritual regression occurs when we feel disconnected from God.
This type of regression can happen suddenly or progressively. Life happens, and the stress, frustration or trauma of the event causes your faith and trust in God to recede and you’re back in the darkness of hopelessness and indecision. Your soul (your mind, will and emotions) is in control again, fighting the spirit within you with all its might, and now your entire body is a battleground. This struggle is your soul’s desperate attempt to protect itself from the submission to God that your spirit desires. At this stage, you can become irritable or tearful. Your peace vanishes, alongside your joy and creativity because so much of your mental, emotional and physical energy is being used in keeping the battle between your soul and spirit at bay.
This self-induced defense mechanism of spiritual regression wreaks so much havoc on your life as you attempt to protect yourself from anxious thoughts or feelings, and try to assure yourself that you’re psychologically safe.
